The Candid Frame #201 - John (Jon One) Perello
John Perello (Jon One) was born in New York's Harlem neighborhood to parents from the Dominican Republic. Growing up in Harlem, his introduction to street art began at an early age, when he would see graffiti and tags on subway cars and city walls. When he was 17 he entered the world of graffiti with his childhood friend "White Man," tagging his name Jon with the numbers 156 on walls and trains in his neighborhood.
He said, "The subway is a museum that runs through the city."
In 1984, he founded the graffiti group 156 All Starz, in order to bring together their passion for painting trains at night and to help forget about their problems, including drug use. At this time, he met the artist Bando, who was living in New York. Following an invitation from Bando, Jonone moved to Parisin 1987.
He began his work as a painter on canvas in a workshop at the Hospital Ephemeral, a literal hospital building that became a squatting place for artists, located in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. Here, he painted with the artists A-One, Sharp, Ash, and Jayone Skki.
Soon, he made a name for himself in Parisian artistic circles through his work on canvas and the exhibitions he held, including one in 1990 at Gallery 45 Gleditsch in Berlin and the exhibition Graffiti Paris, at rue Chapon in Paris.
At an Artcurial auction on June 6, 2007, Match Point, a large canvas by JonOne made at the Hospital Ephemeral in 1993, was bought by a New York collector for €24,800, a record sale for the artist. This auction was also the highest bid ever obtained in France for a work of graffiti art. You can discover more about his work by visiting his website and the videos below.

The Candid Frame #189 - Walter Plotnick
Walter Plotnick is a photo-based artist who lives and works in the Philadelphia area. He received his MFA from University of the Arts and BFA from Tyler School of Art.
My current work is a hybrid of wet photography and digital process. I am influenced by the work of Bauhaus, Constructivist and Surrealist Photographers from the 1920s through the 1930s.
I make photographs and photograms by constructing temporary still lifes, using vintage found objects and images on top of photographic paper in the darkroom. By manipulating a variety of light sources, then digitally combining, repeating or adding images, I am able to visually explore an abstract environment with objects and light, creating movement, form and tension. The Candid Frame #177 - Martine Roch
Martine Roch was in mid-life, living in Dijon, France, when she started getting serious about photography. It was 2004, and she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She dove into photography and Photoshop to take her mind off the disease. She was passionate about her new art form and learned quickly.
One day, while looking at a daguerreotype of a 19th-century lady that she had scanned into Photoshop, Roch looked down at her dog, a golden Labrador Retriever named Boudi. Suddenly, something clicked in her head.
“Let’s try to dress you as a lady,” she said aloud.
And thus was a career born. Roch created dozens of these whimsical hybrids,
then started posting them on the social-networking site Flickr. They became an immediate Internet sensation. A French publisher asked if she would license her photos for reproduction on notebooks and postcards. Soon, a German publisher came calling. Today, her notebooks and postcards are sold worldwide.
People don’t give animals enough credit for being intelligent, Roch believes.
“They think animals are like objects,” Roch says, “but they have feelings and emotions. They have their own way of thinking and reacting to what they see and feel.” You can discover more about Martine and her work by visiting her website.

The Candid Frame #175 - Brooke Shaden
Brooke Shaden was born in March of 1987 in Lancaster, PA, USA. She grew up near the "Amish Country" until attending Temple University. Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with two degrees: film and English. She now resides in Los Angeles, CA, USA with her husband and two cats.
She began creating self-portraits for ease and to have full control over the images, and has since grown into a self-portrait artist. Self portraiture for her is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, she attempts to place herself within worlds she wishes we could live in, where secrets float out in the open, where the impossible becomes possible.
Brooke works to create new worlds within her photographic frame. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements. Brooke's photography questions the definition of what it means to be alive. You can discover more about Brooke and his work by visiting her website and blog.
Brooke Shaden recommends the work of Gregory Crewdson.
