The Candid Frame #165 - Jacquelyn Martin


Jacquelyn Martin (b. 1979) is a staff photojournalist with the Associated Press, Washington DC bureau, where she covers a diverse range of topics from the President and Congress to the National Spelling Bee and the occupy movement. Fluent in Spanish, she has a passion for covering immigration issues. Born in Syracuse, NY, she graduated with honors in 2001 from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

 Her work has been honored with awards from the White House News Photographer’s Association, NPPA, and the Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW). She has served WPOW, a non-profit that educates the public about the work of female photojournalists, as both secretary and vice president. When not on assignment for the AP she can be found around the world working on personal projects, or salsa dancing.

The Candid Frame #157 - Brian Smith


Brian Smith is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer who for the past thirty years has created iconic portraits of famous athletes, celebrities, politicians and business people. His images have appeared in countless books and magazines, not least of which are Sports Illustrated, ESPN the Magazine, Time, Forbes, New York Times Magazine, Elle and British GQ.

He won the Pulitzer for Spot News Photography for his photography of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He was also won awards from both World Press Photo and the Picture of the Year competitions for his image of Greg Louganis hitting his head on the diving board at the Seoul Olympics. His personal project have included images of Burlesque performers from today and the past. He is also the author Secrets of Great Portrait Photography: Pictures of the Famous and the Infamous. The Candid Frame #147 - Mathieu Young


Mathieu Young is a commercial photographer as well as a socially conscious photojournalist whose work has taken him all over the world. His entertainment work includes production images for such popular programs such as So You Think You Can Dance? and Glee. His journalistic and personal projects have focused on deforestation in Cambodia as well image capturing the personalities that make up the Tea Party Movement. His work has been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. He is a good example of a photographer who uses the funds earned by his commercial work to help fund his personal projects, which not only satisfy his desire to make a difference with a camera, but at times can also earn him greater professional opportunities. The Candid Frame #139 - Bill Frakes





Bill Frakes is a Sports Illustrated Staff Photographer based in Florida. He has worked in more than 100 countries for a wide variety of editorial and advertising clients. His advertising clients include Nike, CocaCola, Champion, Isleworth, Stryker, IBM, Nikon, Kodak,Canon, and Reebok. 

Editorially his work has appeared in virtually every major general interest publication in the world. Bill won the coveted Newspaper Photographer of the Year award in the prestigious Pictures of the Year competition. He was a member of the Miami Herald staff that won the Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of Hurricane Andrew . He has also been honored by the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards for reporting on the disadvantaged and by the Overseas Press club for distinguished foreign reporting.

The Candid Frame #138 - Gerd Ludwig

Gerd Ludwig is a National Geographic photographer who is best known for his long-term work documenting the impact of the Chernobyl nuclear accident in the former Soviet Union. This personal project has allowed him to the tell the story of the human toll on the people decades after the initial, dramatic events of the accident itself. For decades, he has also been working on assignments focusing on Russia and Eastern Europe, which has held a personal fascination for him. His book, Broken Empire: After the Fall of the USSR is an incredible visual telling of a country struggling to redefine itself.

He has recently released an iPad App which showcases his work on Chernobyl with still, video and audio commentary. The Long Shadow of Chernobyl provides a unique method for telling the 25-years story of the accident and its long term impact on a country and a people.

Penny De Los Santos is a travel and food culture photographer whose images have appeared in numerous publications including National Geographic, Savuer and Texas Monthly magazines to name just a few. Her life behind the camera has provided her the opportunity to travel to over 30 countries to document stories about history, culture and society revolving around the common language of food. She has been honored with numerous awards and grants for her projects and work including College Photographer of the Year,  the California New Media Award and the Canon USA Photography Grant. Steve Simon is a photojournalist and documentary photographer who has spent years photographing events both large and small. From political events, religious practices and cultural influences, he has rooted his work on the practice of telling stories both big and small. He is also an educator who has taught photography at the International Center of Photography in NewYork and the Loyalist College Photojournalism Program in Canada. He is also the recent author, The Passionate Photographer, a book which focuses on his personal approach to using personal projects to explore a photographer's ability to tell stories and improve their photographic skills. Julia Dean is a photographer, educator, and the founder of the Julia Dean Photo Workshops. Julia received a Bachelor of Science degree in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts degree in journalism at the University of Nebraska. She began her career as an apprentice to pioneering photographer Berenice Abbott. Later, Julia was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York. She has taught for 29 years at such places as the University of Nebraska, Los Angeles Valley College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Santa Monica College, the Santa Fe Workshops, the Maine Photographic Workshops, Oxford University and the Julia Dean Photo Workshops. Richard Koci Hernandez is a photojournalist and documentary photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. His passion for visual storytelling began in his years as a staff photographer at the San Jose Mercury News and continues today in both his personal work and his collaboration with students, including those at the Graduate School of Journalism at U.C. Berkeley. His early embracing of multimedia was ahead of its time and provided him an opportunity to help define a storytelling which is still in its infancy. Aaron Huey is an American photojournalist and documentary photographer who is most widely known for his walk across America in 2002 and his work on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He demonstrates a passion for his subject matter that goes well beyond merely documenting people and events with a camera. Very much on the vein of great photographers such as W. Eugene Smith, Huey uses his camera not only to create unforgettable imagery, but to raise a level of awareness on subject matter that he considers important and worthy of the attention of today's society.
